As we work with startups in all industries, they describe great products, services and technical advancements they have launched. But the one area they all say they are unclear on is PR and Media Relations. So who better to explain the media than reporters, digital media experts and TV anchors -- some of whom are operating their own startups, or are also serial entrepreneurs launching multi-million dollar ventures. We will unveil how the media works, and how startups can work with the media to help grow their business!

This event is FREE, with the panelists below sharing insight from their their personal experiences and take Q&A from attendees:

    • Bruce Bigelow: Editor of Xconomy, a leading tech and business media outlet focused on the exponential economy. Bruce was a longtime business reporter covering technology at the San Diego Union Tribune and member of the newsroom team that was awarded the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting. Before joining the Union-Tribune in 1990, he worked for the Associated Press in Los Angeles and The Kansas City Times.

    • Barbara Bry: A serial entrepreneur who was on the founding team of ProFlowers and Atcom/Info (sold for $470 million and $80 million), Barbara is now COO of Blackbird Ventures. A former business writer for the Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee, Barbara continues to work as a journalist writing a weekly column on entrepreneurship for the San Diego Union Tribune. She also teaches entrepreneurship at UCSD and was the first associate director of CONNECT and first editor for the news site Voice of San Diego.

    • Angela Chee: Owner of Zen Media Inc, a media training and consulting company. With more than 15 years of experience in the broadcast industry, Angela is an award-winning journalist/host who has worked as an Anchor/Reporter for KNBC-TV and KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, Fox 6 in San Diego, E! Entertainment Television and hosted shows for HGTV (Home and Garden Television), The International Channel, Channel One News and helped launch Entertainment Tonight China. Merging her traditional media background with her social media influence has led Angela to establish her own successful business.

    • Rachel Laing: Communications director for Public Policy Strategies and former press secretary to San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders (2008 to 2012). Prior to joining the Mayor's Office, Laing was a PR manager with Sempra Energy/SDG&E and the communications manager for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. Her career in strategic communications was preceded by nearly a decade in business and political journalism, as editor-in-chief of The T Sector magazine, managing editor of the San Diego Daily Transcript, business reporter for the U-T San Diego and regular contributor to publications that include the Hill, Voice of San Diego, and San Diego Magazine.

    • Stacey Ross: Social Media enthusiast and founder of San Diego Bargain Mama, Stacey has been featured extensively in both local and national media outlets for her savvy media marketing skills. She serves as a consultant to others who aspire to greater brand exposure.
