DAR.fm - overview

Most people will know Michael Robertson as founder of MP3.com which was acquired by Vivendi Universal for $385MM in 1999 or Gizmo5 (acquired by Google in November 2009).

For most entrepreneurs that might be sucessful enough but not for Michael.

His newest venture, DAR.fm is an online service which records radio to play back on demand. Much like the DVR (digital video recorder) captures TV broadcasts to play back when requested DAR (digital audio recorder) does the same for radio.

It's like a Tivo for radio. Because DAR.fm operates on the internet you can schedule using just a web browser and then listen from a PC, iPhones, Android, internet radios and other devices.

Using DAR requires a web browser and it's a free service. First browse or search the station and show guide. Nearly every popular talk show is available covering politics, sports and religion. There are hundreds of great music stations as well.

After locating material of interest you can click the Record button. This will direct DAR's servers to capture the material and store it for future playback.
If you selected a weekly show then each day the service will record that show. The guide knows how long it is and what stations carry it so there's no need to provide that info. However if there is a specific station desired that is selectable as well.

About the speaker

In 1997, Michael Robertson founded digital music company MP3.com. This company brought online music to the mainstream by amassing the largest collection of digital music and introducing it to millions of consumers.

As CEO and Chairman, Mr. Robertson raised venture capital from top tier venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Idealab (now called Clearstone) and took the company public in July 1999 on NASDAQ with the largest internet IPO of all time. Within four years, MP3.com grew annual revenues to more than $80MM annually and sold the profitable company to the world's largest music company Vivendi/Universal.

In 2005 Mr. Robertson entered the VOIP business starting Gizmo5, a telecom company enabling net users to make free or inexpensive calls over the internet.
Gizmo5 supported the SIP telephony standard allowing users to make/receive calls from PCs, laptops, smartphones and VOIP phones. Gizmo5 raised venture capital from New York based firm Dawntreader.

With Mr. Robertson as CEO, Gizmo5 grew to more than 11 million users and to break-even. Gizmo5 was acquired by Google in 2009 and merged with its Google Voice division.
Currently Mr. Robertson is founder and CEO of MP3tunes, a vanguard in personal cloud music. MP3tunes stores music fans personal music collections making them accessible from any net aware device including PCs, laptops, smart phones, internet radios and even car devices. Hardware partners include Logitech, Nokia, Roku and Clarion.

CEO – The Warren Company
A Network of Alliance Professionals

Personal: Mr. Lynch is listed in Who's Who: Global Leaders. He is founding Chairman of the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals, and has chaired the Strategic Integration and Alliance Committee of the Common Enterprise initiative of the State of the World Forum. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, with combat duty in Vietnam. Robert resides in Naples, Florida.

Thought Leadership: Mr. Lynch has been recognized for his groundbreaking work in creating "the architecture of cooperation" which underpins thousands of strategic alliances in this country and around the world. He has written several books and the profession’s first benchmarking studies. He pioneered the initial research in Alliance Architectures with Best Practices research beginning in 1988, followed by a series of bench-marking studies in Alliance Formation and Management in 1993, Strategic Sourcing in 1997, and e-Commerce in 1999. Mr. Lynch continues his quest to discover and innovate in the Strategic Alliance Profession. Robert is deeply engaged in the next edge of cooperation, specifically using Alliances as Engines of Innovation, the Leadership Role of Alliance Champions, the Architecture of Trust, Synergistic Negotiations, and the New Economics of Synergistic Systems.

Economic Development: While a community revitalization specialist in the 1970's, he designed and implemented private-public partnerships for urban commercial and neighborhood revitalization programs resulting in over $20 million in new business investments and hundreds of historic restorations of low income neighborhood homes in declining inner cities. Robert also established joint labor-management committees to improve labor productivity in both the private and public sectors. 1980, at a time when interest rates were 18-20%, Robert became a Development Banker, founding a Certified Development Company, which resulted in over $20 million in small business loans in the first 18 months, as well as a state program to use $10 million in public sector pension funds to underwrite small business loans. Several years later he transformed an old factory into an innovative technology business "incubator" occupied by 65 growing companies. He developed business strategies, plans, marketing programs, debt/equity financing for numerous of these incubating businesses, assisting many of these smaller businesses in forming strategic alliances to launch their growth during a time when bank and venture capital money was extremely scarce. He also was instrumental in founding a high technology consortium. As an entrepreneur, Robert has developed, owned, and operated several commercial real estate projects including apartments, offices, marina, and retail. In one urban neighborhood, to catalyze the revitalization effort he restored a historic building, transforming it into a $1 million award-winning restaurant/inn which was cited in major travel guides and restaurant reviews for excellence and innovation. He also conducted feasibility studies for shopping centers, housing projects, hotels, and offices.

Consulting: In his consulting practice, Mr. Lynch places a strong emphasis on using best-practice architectures for successful organizational transformation and building capability inside organizations, for clients, strategic implementation is where the real value lies. He and his team have focused their efforts on building alliances for scores of companies throughout the globe in a wide variety industries ranging from aerospace (aviation & defense), automotive, energy, financial services (banking, real estate, insurance), high tech (computers, electronics, telecommunications,) and medical (biotech, heath care, instrumentation, pharmaceutical, managed health care), and petro-chemicals. His clients have included AT&T, Accenture, Astra-Merck, AT&T, Bell Canada, BellSouth, Cisco Systems, Dow Chemical, Dupont, Eli Lilly, GE, Glaxo-Smith Kline, Hewlett Packard, Honeywell, IBM, Intuit, Lockheed-Martin, Lucent, Media One, Mobil, NCR, PacBell, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Procter & Gamble, Prudential, Smith Kline Beecham, Sprint, Thomsen Financial, USAA, Warner Lambert, Wells Fargo, and Xerox as well as small businesses and governmental agencies.

Author: To fill the gap in understanding and operating cooperative ventures, Mr. Lynch enjoys writing. He wrote the award winning book, The Practical Guide to Joint Ventures and Corporate Alliances (John Wiley & Sons, 1987), which is based on his own experiences along with scores of other managers operating "in the trenches." The "architecture of cooperation" is the focus of his best selling book, Business Alliances: The Hidden Competitive Weapon, (John Wiley & Sons, 1993), which details the state-of-the-art in alliance formation, design, and operations. He wrote the popular chapter “Fostering Champions” for Peter Drucker’s Leader of the Future book (1999). He has just finished a book on Cooperative Entrepreneurship and is currently writing two books: Breakthroughs in Cooperative Negotiations and The Architecture of Trust. His books have been translated into several languages, and his numerous articles on alliances have appeared in a broad range of magazines. He is often quoted in business journals such a Nations Business, The Wall Street Journal, and The Conference Board Reports.

Education: Mr. Lynch holds a master’s degree in Organizational Development from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree in International Relations from Brown University. Webceleb is as much about the fans as it is musicians, and they believe that by working together they can build a community that helps them both earn money each time a song is downloaded. By rewarding those who purchase music with a slice of future sales, they're encouraged to market the musicians they discover and legally download music. Musicians are now able to earn a living, form partnerships with their fans, retain 100% ownership of their IP, and build a vested marketing team. Their mantra is to help musicians earn a living and receive the recognition they deserve, while never undervaluing the role of the fan.

Featured Entrepreneur speaking that night:

Matthew Reichardt - founder of

Bumbleride:

Five years ago, Bumbleride caught the attention of the juvenile industry for its introduction of clean, streamlined, intuitively - designed strollers complimented by a fashion-forward palette of fabrics and interactive patterns.

Since that time, Bumbleride has gone on to earn a reputation for safety and value, having successfully transfromed a much needed - parenting tool into a must-have accessory that merges seamlessly into the active parent's lifestyle.

Bumbleride was founded in 2004 by Matthew and Emily Reichardt. New Parents at the time, they were met with dissapointment while shopping for a stoller for their daughter. The stroller market was flooded with options and yet Matt and Emily had trouble finding a product that achieved a strong sense of balance between form, function, and value. This noticable gap in the stoller market led the Reichardts to do what most would not: They set out to design and manufacture their own line of high-quality, modern strollers with eye catching colors and innovative features.

Matthew has a background in international business and is a graduate of SDSU

Emily has a background in fashion and model management
